The Evangelist symbols each hold a spiraling scroll; the eagle reveals the inscription: "Sanctus iohanne ewangelista"; the same formula is repeated in the scrolls held by the other symbols.
The centurion at the right of the cross holds a scroll inscribed: "Vere filius Dei erat iste"
