According to the colophon, it was completed by Shaykh Kamāl ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Sabzawārī, the calligrapher and illuminator, in Astarabad (present-day Gorgan, Iran) in 941 AH / 1534 CE. The text, divided into five compartments, is in calligraphic vocalized naskh in black ink and vocalized thuluth in gold ink outlined in black. Illuminated rosettes with colored dots serve as verse markers. The decorated colophon (fol. 8b) is written in tawqīʿ/riqāʿ script in gold ink. Later bequest (waqf) seal impressions of the Vizier al-Shahīd ʿAlī Pāshā, dated 1130 AH / 1717 CE, appear on fols. 2a, 2b, and 3a. The brown leather binding with interconnected gold-tooled lobed medallions and discs and doublures with filigree decoration is original to the manuscript.</note></notesStmt><sourceDesc xml:id="n216.006386"><msDesc xml:id="n216.006387"><msIdentifier xml:id="n216.006388"><settlement xml:id="n216.006389">Baltimore</settlement><repository xml:id="n216.006390">The Walters Art Museum</repository><idno xml:id="n216.006391">W.579</idno></msIdentifier><msContents xml:id="n216.006392"><textLang mainLang="ara" xml:id="n216.006393">The primary language in this manuscript is Arabic.</textLang><msItem n="item 10" xml:id="n216.006394"><locus from="2b" to="8b" xml:id="n216.006395">fols. 2b - 8b</locus><title type="work" xml:id="n216.006396">Miftāḥ al-najāḥ al-mukanná bi-al-wasīlah ilá kull ḥizb wa-falāḥ</title><title type="work-vernacular" xml:lang="ara" xml:id="n216.006397">مفتاح النجاح المكنى بالوسيلة الى كل حزب وفلاح</title><title xml:id="n216.006398"><note type="title" xml:id="n216.006399">Title in a later hand appears on fol. 1a</note></title><incipit xml:lang="ara" xml:id="n216.006400">اللهم يا من دلع لسان الصباح بنطق تبلجه ...</incipit><author sameAs="#author_13" xml:id="n216.006401"></author><respStmt sameAs="#scribe_14" xml:id="n216.006402"><resp xml:id="n216.006403">scribe</resp><name xml:id="n216.006404"></name></respStmt><colophon xml:id="n216.006405"><locus from="8b" xml:id="n216.006406"></locus><note type="colophon-transliterated" xml:id="n216.006407">tammat al-daʿwāt al-mubārakāt /1/ bi-ḥamdi Allāhi taʿālá wa-mannihi al-karīm /2/ ʿalá al-yadi al-ʿabd al-mudhnib al-rājī ilá raḥmati Allāh al-maliki /3/ al-raḥīm al-bārī shaykh Kamāl ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Sabzawārī /4/ tajāwaza Allāhu ʿan sayyiʾatihimā bi-baldah ṭayyibah Ustarābād [sic] ḥummiyat /5/ ʿan al-afāti wa-al-balīyāti fī shuhūr sanat iḥdá wa-/6/ arbaʿīn wa-tisʿimiʾatin min al-hijrah muḥarriruhā wa-mudhahhibuhā wa-kātibuhā /7/</note><note type="colophon-comment" xml:id="n216.006408">Colophon gives the full name of the calligrapher/illuminator, Kamāl ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq al-Sabzawārī, with the date 941 AH / 1534 CE and place name Astarābād</note></colophon></msItem></msContents><physDesc xml:id="n216.006409"><objectDesc form="book" xml:id="n216.006410"><supportDesc material="paper" xml:id="n216.006411"><support xml:id="n216.006412"><p xml:id="n216.006413">Laid paper</p></support><extent xml:id="n216.006414">Foliation: i+9+i<dimensions type="leaves" xml:id="n216.006415"><height unit="cm" xml:id="n216.006416">23.5</height><width unit="cm" xml:id="n216.006417">16.5</width></dimensions><dimensions type="written" n="item 10" xml:id="n216.006418"><height unit="cm" xml:id="n216.006419">13.0</height><width unit="cm" xml:id="n216.006420">8.5</width></dimensions></extent><collation xml:id="n216.006421"><p xml:id="n216.006422"><catchwords xml:id="n216.006423">None</catchwords></p></collation></supportDesc><layoutDesc xml:id="n216.006424"><layout n="item 10" ruledLines="7" xml:id="n216.006425" columns="1">Text divided into five compartments: three compartments across the written surface and two compartments indented with panels 2 cm in width on each side; framing lines in dark blue, black, gold, light green, and red</layout></layoutDesc></objectDesc><handDesc xml:id="n216.006426"><handNote n="item 10" xml:id="n216.006427">Written in calligraphic vocalized naskh script in black ink; vocalized thuluth script in gold ink outlined in black (top, middle, and bottom lines); colophon in tawqīʿ/riqāʿ script in gold ink, both vocalized</handNote></handDesc><decoDesc xml:id="n216.006428"><decoNote n="item 10" xml:id="n216.006429">Illuminated headpiece with the basmalah in tawqīʿ script (fol. 2b); illuminated colophon (fol. 8b); text in black and gold with blue decoration, divided into compartments; polychrome text frame; contours of the thuluth-script lines decorated with blue tendrils over a ground of red hatched lines; naskh-script panels flanked by polychrome medallions with gold-tooled outlines; illuminated rosette verse markers with colored dots</decoNote><decoNote n="fol. 2b" xml:id="n216.006430"><title xml:id="n216.006431">Incipit with illuminated headpiece</title><note type="decoration-form" xml:id="n216.006432">Incipit; headpiece</note><note type="decoration-label" xml:id="n216.006433">This manuscript opens with an illuminated headpiece containing a cartouche with the doxological formula (basmalah) in tawqīʿ script.
