Born in Fergana (Central Asia), Babur was a patrilineal Timurid and matrilineal Chingizid. Babur penned his memoir in Chaghatay Turkish, which he referred to as Turkic, and it was later translated into Persian and repeatedly copied and illustrated under his Mughal successors. The present copy in Persian written in nastaʿlīq script is a fragment of a dispersed manuscript that was executed in the late 10th century AH / 16th CE. The ordering of the leaves as found here does not follow the narrative of the text. The Walters' fragment contains thirty mostly full-page paintings that are representative of the Mughal court style under the Mughal emperor Akbar (r. 963-1014 AH/ 1556-1605). Another major fragment of this work, containing fifty-seven folios, is in the State Museum of Eastern Cultures, Moscow. The dark green leather binding, which is not original to the textblock, dates to the late 13th AH/ 19th century or early 14th AH/ 20th century CE</note></notesStmt><sourceDesc xml:id="n237.114786"><msDesc xml:id="n237.114787"><msIdentifier xml:id="n237.114788"><settlement xml:id="n237.114789">Baltimore</settlement><repository xml:id="n237.114790">The Walters Art Museum</repository><idno xml:id="n237.114791">W.596</idno></msIdentifier><msContents xml:id="n237.114792"><textLang mainLang="per" xml:id="n237.114793">The primary language in this manuscript is Persian.</textLang><msItem n="item 22" xml:id="n237.114794"><locus from="5a" to="31b" xml:id="n237.114795">fols. 5a - 31b</locus><title type="work" xml:id="n237.114796">Bāburnāmah</title><title type="work-vernacular" xml:lang="per" xml:id="n237.114797">بابر نامه</title><title xml:id="n237.114798"><note type="title" xml:id="n237.114799">Also known as Wāqiʿāt-i Bāburī.</note></title><incipit xml:lang="per" xml:id="n237.114800">معلوم وومشخص نيست لشكرى كه بود تمام رفت ...</incipit><note type="text" xml:id="n237.114801">Text begins abruptly; no continuous narration from one leaf to another, implying that the leaves were selected and bound at random.</note><author sameAs="#author_63" xml:id="n237.114802"></author></msItem></msContents><physDesc xml:id="n237.114803"><objectDesc form="book" xml:id="n237.114804"><supportDesc xml:id="n237.114805" material="paper"><support xml:id="n237.114806"><p xml:id="n237.114807">Re-margined in different colors at a later stage, late 13th AH/ 19th century or early 14th AH/ 20th century CE</p></support><extent xml:id="n237.114808">Foliation: 35<dimensions type="leaves" xml:id="n237.114809"><height unit="cm" xml:id="n237.114810">32.0</height><width unit="cm" xml:id="n237.114811">21.0</width></dimensions><dimensions type="written" n="item 22" xml:id="n237.114812"><height unit="cm" xml:id="n237.114813">17.0</height><width unit="cm" xml:id="n237.114814">9.0</width></dimensions></extent><foliation xml:id="n237.114815">Textblock of 27 folios flanked by four later fly leaves at each end.</foliation></supportDesc><layoutDesc xml:id="n237.114816"><layout n="item 22" columns="1" xml:id="n237.114817" ruledLines="12"></layout></layoutDesc></objectDesc><handDesc xml:id="n237.114818"><handNote n="item 22" xml:id="n237.114819">Two different but clear nastaʿlīq hands.</handNote></handDesc><decoDesc xml:id="n237.114820"><decoNote n="item 22" xml:id="n237.114821">Thirty full-page miniatures; colored borders</decoNote><decoNote type="illustration" n="fol. 5b" xml:id="n237.114822"><title xml:id="n237.114823">Babur confronts his enemies</title><note type="decoration-form" xml:id="n237.114824">Illustration</note><note type="decoration-label" xml:id="n237.114825">This painting depicts the Mughal emperor Babur with his brave companions confronting their enemies in the mountains of Kharābūk and Pashāmūn.
